The gap between what we wished our lives looked like compared to the actual reality is massive. Dreaming is fantastic, and we truly do need more dreamers, but so much more than that, we need dreamers who do. Who get stuff done. Who take massive action and make their dreams a reality. Who wake up earlier than everyone else to work hard at creating the life they want to live.
We need more of these people. People who aren’t afraid to step out and try something new and scary. Who are willing to fail if that’s what is required to move them forward. Who embrace change and move towards crazy ideas. We need you.
Here are 4 brilliant reasons to try something crazy you’ve never done before
1. Trying is Brave
Just the act of taking that first step takes courage. It’s often the hardest part. Gathering up the guts to take the leap is so hard, but after you make the jump everything becomes a little easier.
And because most people never get over the fear of trying, you'll immediately have an advantage over those people. We get so caught up in what could go wrong, what our friends will think about us, and the belief that we'll somehow never recover if we fail. But if we can lean into that feeling of doubt and uncertainty, then we don't have a real reason to listen to those voices anymore, and can get to work on what is true.
2. You can find out what doesn’t work
If you try something new and it doesn’t work, then now you know what doesn’t work and can move forward with that experience in mind. Thomas Edison is famous for saying, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
If we have this mentality as we try something crazy and uncharted, we can learn to be OK with not hitting it out of the park every single time we step to the plate. We can learn to be OK with less than perfect, because we recognize that perfect is a myth. That we don't have to try to be perfect anymore, and be comfortable with the outcome, whatever that may be, success or not. And when we aren't striving for perfection, everything becomes less stressful, and life feels more enjoyable and relaxing.
3. Doing creates momentum
Just taking action creates positive momentum going forward. It’s impossible not have huge momentum after facing your fears head on and then crushing them. The positive energy that creates is massive, and you can use that energy as the launching pad for your next move.
And even you don't succeed, even you fall flat on your face, you will still have done something that most never do: you have tried. And knowing this, while often not the most encouraging thing in the world in the moment, can be the thing you use for the next crazy idea or dream that propels you forward.
4. You can move on to the next crazy thing
Now that you’ve tried something that was big and scary and audacious, you can move forward and do the next thing that’s in front of you. Whether that’s step 2 of what you just started, or something completely different, you can learn from the experience and keep moving forward with life.
Because we never want to get stuck on just one thing. And if we do that thing, whether we fail or succeed, it allows to us the space to move on, leave it in the past, and put our energy towards the next important thing, instead of endlessly thinking about what could happen.
Life happens in steps and season, and we never want to stay stuck in either one of those for too long.
Practical Next Steps
If you have an idea or a dream inside that you’ve been bottling up and keeping hidden from the world, it’s time to let it out. Time to release it into the world and see what happens. Start that business, go on that trip you’ve always wanted to go on, start your blog, or ask her out.
This should scare the hell out of you.
You might fail. In fact, you must fail at some point. But you get up and move on. Such is the result of trying new and different things, and the world will be better off because of it.
The best time to plant an oak tree was yesterday, but the next best time is today. Today is a really good day to do. So go, do what you must, and watch your life be transformed by the power of doing.
