How Fear Tries To Stop Us From Making Our Dreams Into Reality

We often hear people, whether they are family, friends, or strangers, talk about their dreams, goals, and all the amazing things they want to do with their lives. But no one seems to actually be doing anything about those dreams and goals.

This is most of us. We say that we’ll “do it someday.” But someday is not on the calendar. It doesn’t exist. It's a lie, an excuse for putting off something that's difficult.

The cliche goes “everything you want lies on the other side of fear.” It’s a cliche for a reason, because it’s true. And especially true in the areas of our lives that matter the most to us.

At the core, fear tries to get us to believe that we don’t have what it takes to do whatever it is that we’re trying to do, whether that’s starting a business, asking out the girl, or trying something that we’ve never done before.

Here are 3 lies fear uses to try to cripple and stop us from pursuing our dreams

1. You’re Not Good Enough.

Fear creeps in and whispers “You’re not good enough.” It tries to get us to believe that we don’t have what it takes. That we aren’t strong enough to do this. That we shouldn’t even bother to try, because we’ll never make it. That we’ll never do anything with our lives.

This might be the most dangerous and powerful lie, because it sounds so much like truth when we hear it. We believe that what we’re hearing is true, so we fall prey and quit going after our dreams.

The takeaway: Whenever you hear the “not good enough” voice, fight back by repeating what you know to be true about yourself, and tell someone else about it. Shame and fear love to isolate us and make us feel like we’re the only ones in the world who are struggling with this, when it’s actually a universal feeling. Don't isolate yourself.

2. You’re too late.

“You’re too late. This has already been done. Why are you always so slow? You’ll never succeed.” Fear just loves to get us to endlessly doubt ourselves. It tries to turn us against ourselves and destroy us from the inside out.

But we must realize that fear is a liar. It’s never too late to try something new. Never, ever. Yesterday was the best time to start, but today is next best. Whatever you want to do, today’s your best bet. But even if you miss today, it’s never too late. Don’t listen to fear.

The takeaway: It’s never, ever too late. No matter if you're 13 or 73, it's always a good time to make your dreams come true. There's never a better time to change the world than right now.

3. You’ll look stupid.

“You’ll look like an idiot if you try to do this. Think of your friends; what will they think about you? What if you fail? What if you mess up?”

All of a sudden, the voice in our head gets really loud and starts yelling. Chaos and confusion is everywhere. This is not a battle for the weak-hearted. We must stand our ground.

The takeaway: If we want to change the world, we will deal with these fears. If we want to make a difference, it won't always be unicorns and rainbows. If we want to live a fulfilling life, we must learn how to deal with everything that will come against us to try and stop us.

Of course, we can choose the easy way if we want to. The path to mediocrity is safe, easy, not nearly as chaotic. But if we want to leave a mark on this world, we must be brave enough to face these fears that will arise whenever we try to do something that is different, that matters, that leaves a dent in the universe.
