Find Your Friends, and You Find Your Future

We become like the people we spend the most time with.

Have you taken some time recently to ask yourself if the company you keep is pulling you forward into your future, or holding you back from your destiny?

“You are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

Humans tend to be attracted to people that are on their level emotionally, physically, spiritually, intellectually, etc. Gossipers attract other gossipers. Actors attract other actors. Businessmen attract other businessmen.

That’s why it can be difficult to break out of the circles we have formed, because it goes against what feels right and natural to us. We have to work to move ahead if our current relationships are dragging us down.

Let’s use finances as a way to illustrate this law.

Broke people hang out with broke people and get broker. Wealthy people hang out with wealthy people and get wealthier!

It’s that simple. Want to move ahead in life? Change who you hang out with.

Sometimes it's not so much about making the right choice, but about following the right people!

We are all called to love the poor and broken of the world. Yet, there's a critical difference between loving them and giving them a place of influence in our lives.

Love and serve the down-and-outers of the world, the drama queens, the drug addicts, but be careful about allowing them a place of influence. You should not allow just anyone to befriend you. It may seem harsh, but is your life worth sacrificing on the altar of “helping people?”

Make no mistake, some people will not like you for having boundaries. That’s okay. Love them anyways.

Find your friends and you find your future. Who are you becoming like today? The answer lies in your closest friends.

Find your people, and you find your place in life!

Practical Next Steps

You have permission to pursue friendship with people who are further ahead in life than you are. Find leaders that you respect and ask them to coffee. If it scares you, do it!
